An Update on the Saskatchewan Animal Rescue Certification Program

Michelle Spark, Shelter Manager, Battlefords Humane Society and Sandra Anderson, Program Director, Saskatchewan SPCA

Presently there is no licencing or training required in order to establish or operate an animal rescue. Concerns continue to be raised by the animal welfare sector, the public, and animal enforcement agencies relating to the welfare of animals in some rescues. Caring for homeless animals is difficult work and rescues without sufficient training or resources may become overwhelmed with the tremendous responsibility. The proposed voluntary Saskatchewan Animal Rescue Certification Program seeks to raise the standard of care in animal rescues by providing education, training, and mentorship opportunities for animal rescues and shelters.
